Elmvale Outdoors LLC was founded June 28, 2007

Approximately ten years ago our founder Brad Burrell had the idea to open an outdoor survival school. Survival had always been a passion of his.  Over the years he had put ideas down on paper and thrown them in a drawer to collect dust. Not long after the idea to have an outdoors school Brad became a CEFS instructor for the State Of Connecticut, and soon after also became a Bow Hunter Safety instructor.

While doing the personal preparedness chapter in the CEFS manual Brad taught survival and compass skills. After teaching this section many people had asked where they could learn more about these, survival and compass skills. Unfortunately the answer had to be “you must go out and practice the compass and survival skills, and here are a few resources to help you.” Then it was on with the next instructor to cover the next chapter. To cover compass and survival skills during the course there is only a minimal amount of time one and a half to two hours maximum. The real time it takes to cover survival and compass skills is days, weeks, months or more depending on the individuals. Due to inquires and interest in the skills Brad decided to pursue the venture of an outdoor school.

Brad has been an avid hunter for the past twenty years. He has spent thousands of hours in the woods from North Dakota all the way to Maine. From upland hunting with his English Springer Spaniels to hunting black bear in the White Mountains of New Hampshire with his brother Craig and several friends. While teaching many of his friends to hunt and fish he has also shown them the skills they need to navigate in the wilderness and to survive the elements should they become disoriented.

Some of Brads other achievements were serving as an Emergency Medical Technician in a volunteer fire department. Unfortunately he had to give this up due to time constraints. He has his recreational boating license, Connecticut pistol permit, and his New Hampshire pistol Permit. To date he has been an instructor in Connecticut for eight years.

The name Elmvale Outdoors LLC came from the one room schoolhouse that Brad and his family now occupy. The school was originally named the Elmvale School, due to the thirteen elms that were on the property of which only one survives. The outdoors part of the name fit the nature of the business and the company was incorporated as a limited liability company.
