Practical Skills For A Lifetime Of Adventure
At Elmvale Outdoors LLC we are dedicated to teaching outdoor skills and survival skills, as well as planning for prolonged power outages, and what to do if you are stranded in a car, and planning for terrorist attacks. To view some of the skills we teach check out our list of courses.  We also produce customized courses tailored to our customers needs.

The compass skills we teach are so easy to learn that children can easily learn them.  Here one of our students learns the basics of using a compass.

All students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
Skills learned at Elmvale Outdoors LLC are practical skills for a lifetime of adventure.

A recent hunters survival course in January 2008

Two hunters asked If I could teach them what to do if they came down out of their tree stand and got lost on their way out of the woods.  They decided that this would be a one night adventure, because they could walk out when it was light. After some consultation we went out into the woods after dark 7:30 p.m.,and found ourselves an area to construct a shelter.  The temperature was 0 degrees with a 3 to 5 mph. breeze and there was about 8 inches of snow on the ground.  Using our headlamps we gathered shelter materials and firewood for the night.

The process of gathering material and firewood for the shelter along with building the shelter was 1.5 hours.  We then started our fire in less than 30 seconds using a single match.

The shelter stayed 64 degrees inside.  To help maintain the temperature inside we used stones  from a stone wall as heaters.  These stones were placed in the fire for two hours and placed stratigecally around the inside of the shelter. For water we melted down snow and ice.  We drank pine needle tea and for breakfast we ate pheasant.

For materials the two hunters were told to bring only what they would take hunting with them.
Knife
waterproof matches
parachute cord
small first aid kit
compass
emergency blanket
water bottle
snack bar
head lamp
clothing on our backs

Out of all the items the first aid kit was unused.  Good thing.  This is one of the most important items in your kit and you should never leave it behind.
